Scott Andrew Bartley

Scott Andrew Bartley, a native of Vermont, has worked for the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, Mass., from 1984 to 1999. He was their Manuscripts Curator, Reference Librarian, and oversaw their Fine Arts Collection for ten years. He is currently a genealogical researcher and archival consultant for hire who also edits two national journals, Mayflower Descendant and Vermont Genealogy. He has written the "Vermont" chapter of the Red Book (2nd ed., 1992), co-authored with Alice Eichholz; edited Vermont Families in 1791, Volume 1 (1992); Transcription of the state copy of the 1850 Federal Census for Springfield and Baltimore, Vermont (1993); co-indexed Vital records of Rockingham, Vermont and records of the First Church of Rockingham, Vermont (1994); Vermont Families in 1791, Volume 2 (1997); research articles on Vermont on NEHGS.org (1999-present); with Marjorie-J. Bartley, Windsor County, Vermont, Probate Index, 1778-1899 (2000); Researching American Vital Statistics Records (2001); Researching American Census Records (2002); Researching American Probate Records (2003); Researching American Cemetery Records (2004); and "Name Changes in Vermont, 1778-1900" as a special issue for Vermont Genealogy (2004). He has written articles and/or book reviews for The New England Historical and Genealogical Register; The American Genealogist; National Genealogical Society Quarterly; Mayflower Descendant; Vermont Genealogy; and Rhode Island Roots.

Drew is active in several archival and genealogical circles locally and nationally. He is a member of the New England Archivists and the Society of American Archivists, where he edited one of their newsletters. He is a past president of the Genealogical Society of Vermont, serving 1100 members and edited their newsletter. He is working on several genealogical projects: the descendants of George Lamphere of Westerly, R.I. (part one with English Origins published in the Register and part two scheduled for 2005); descendants of Peter Bartley of Dresden, N.Y.; non-Mayflower Bradford families (parts published); abstracting the pre-statehood records of Vermont; as well as continuing to edit the Vermont Families series.
